GENERAL QUESTIONNAIRE
Could you briefly describe yourself to me (i.e. family background, interests,
etc.)?
Why do you want to offer your time to work with our organization and with the
children of Bali? What do you hope to get out of your experience and what do
you feel you can contribute to the program?
Do you consider yourself to be a patient and flexible person?
(Non-profit work in developing nations requires both of these qualities. You
are the part of a larger picture here, and the hope is to play a successful
role in children’s education in Bali. This type of work is quite rewarding,
but not for everyone. It is a lot of grass root and humanitarian work. Our
expectations from working in the West and the developed world is not always
what will you find here. We are working in Indonesia, and in doing so we must
remain respectful of their culture and concepts of time. It is not our job
to question the Balinese work ethic or concept of time. We just go with it…and
this is very important. The Balinese may not be ‘professional’ or ‘organized’ in
your opinion, but it is their world and things work in a certain way. It is
easy to become frustrated if you hang on to Western ideals. This is just a
note for you to think about when considering yourself for this position. .
Bali is a fun place to live, but this still is work.. if you can accept these
things, Bali will be a great place to work and live in for you!).

Problem solving
Please take your time in answering the following questions. These questions
are directed at how a volunteer will solve potential problems that might occur
while living in Bali.
1. You are living in a small village with a Balinese family, where you are
teaching in the elementary schools about 10 hours a week. You have been in
the village for a few weeks, your schedule has been sorted, and are starting
to feel at home there with the local community. It is Monday morning and you
are on your way to teach a class when the head of the school stops you and
says that due to a Hindu holiday, all schools will be closed for a week. How
will you handle this situation? What experiences in the past have helped you
to resolve this situation?
2. Teaching supplies are limited here in Bali. Imagine that you are to teach
a one-hour class to 25 nine-year-old Balinese children. Your topic is animals.
You have no formal lesson plans or materials, only simple aids like magazines,
household items, and so on. Please outline for me a 60-minute lesson plan on
how you would go about teaching this class. Please do not include too much
detail, just a basic outline.
FINALLY…. How did you hear about the Bali Children’s Project volunteer
opportunities?
